A 25-year-old Mt. Vernon man is being held in the Marion County Jail on a new outstanding warrant for aggravated battery with the discharge of a firearm.
Centralia Police tell WJBD-WSIQ news Mack Herron of North Highway 37 is charged in connection with a September 2021 shooting near the intersection of Lincoln and Howard. Bond on the warrant is set at a half-million dollars.
At the time of the incident, Centralia Police Chief Greg Dodson said Dalshaun Mitchell of Centralia was crossing the parking lot of the Marion County Housing Authority while walking northbound on Lincoln Street. The shots were reportedly fired from a passing blue Chrysler 200. The car was also traveling northbound on Lincoln when Mitchell was approached from behind. Dodson says eight shots were fired, two striking Mitchell in the lower extremities.
The vehicle then sped from the scene. Mitchell was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital and later transferred to a St. Louis hospital for treatment.
While Mitchell told police he didn’t know who shot him or why, Marion County Housing Authority’s video of the car helped police solve the case.
Centralia Police Lieutenant Steve Whritenour told WJBD-WSIQ news Sunday morning that within 48 hours with very good video and a cooperating witness they had identified Herron as the shooter and had identified the car owner who had not given Herron permission to use the car for committing the shooting.
Herron was in the custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department on another case that had been completed that led to him being released on the outstanding warrant to Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies.
