Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul is announcing final approval of the national 26-billion dollar opioid settlement agreement.
Illinois’ share is 760-million dollars, with the money going out to state and local governments covered by the deal during the second quarter of this year.
Attorney General Raoul says the funds will be used to fight problems caused by addictive opiates.
“The opioid epidemic has destroyed countless lives and families throughout the state and devastated communities. It is imperative the resources reach these areas and be used to abate the problem.”
Raoul says the deal also includes some safeguards.
“There is a clearinghouse to make sure that not too many opioids are not being delivered to a particular pharmacy that may be a bad acting pharmacy.”
This is the second-largest multi-state agreement in US History and is the result of three years of negotiations with companies like Johnson and Johnson, Cardinal, McKesson, and Ameriscource-Bergen.
