A fire in the basement of a Wamac home Thursday afternoon was confined to an overloaded electrical cord that had burst into flames.

Centralia Fire Protection District Chief Ross Boshera says they were able to put out the fire by turning off the breaker and taking the cord outside.

The fire at 210 South Wabash was just down the street from the Wamac City Hall. An officer quickly arrived on the scene to help a handicapped person into a wheelchair and get out of the home uninjured.

Boshera indicated the initial call made the situation sound much worse so Centralia City Firefighters were called for mutual aid.
