The Salem City Council took the first step Tuesday night for the replacement of the troublesome South Broadway waterline.

The council agreed to have an engineer prepare plan for the replacement of the waterline from Main Street to near Schutt Sports and Kell Street.

Public Works Director Annette Brushwitz had earlier recommended the waterline project as her choice to utilize the city’s $949,000 in ARPA funds. Mayor Nic Farley concurred.

“I think that using those ARPA funds for those public works projects like that is probably the best investment we can make.  Especially if we want to bring businesses down to that south side and our history with breaks.”

If the city moves forward with the project after plans are complete, construction could take place next year.
