Both Marion and Jefferson County have been selected to receive an appropriation by Congress to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in both counties.

Marion County is scheduled to receive a total of $59,340 and Jefferson County $62,183 under both phases of the program.

A local board is charged with distributing funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas in the county.  Representatives of the United Way of South Central Illinois, Red Cross, Catholic Charities, the Salvation Army, and local church representatives and local government officials will determine how the funds are awarded.

Under terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, be eligible to receive federal funds, have an accounting system, practice nondiscrimination, have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and shelter services and must have a voluntary board.

Qualifying agencies are encouraged to apply via the United Way website www.uwsci.org or by contacting Nat Wellen at the United Way of South Central Illinois at 618-242-8000 for an application.  The final deadline will be April 1st, 2022.
