Marion County Sheriff Andy Garden has changed his mind and has decided not to seek election as sheriff in the June Republican primary. After Board Chair Debbie Smith read his letter announcing he would retire at the end of his current term in December he received a standing ovation from the board.
In his letter, Garden said the decision came after much thought and self-reflection. He also apologized for his indecisiveness. Garden says the decision was made difficult due to his family at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office which he called one of the best law enforcement agencies in the region.
Later in comments to the board, he said he loves horses and wants to ride professionally while young enough to still do so. He also announced his support for Sheriff’s Department Detective Ryan Castleman to replace him. Castleman announced as a candidate Tuesday night.
After the meeting, Garden further explained his decision.
“33 years I was just thinking about another 4 years, it’s kind of daunting to me. You don’t realize the stress you are under with the responsibility of running the department. And to tell you the truth I realized I’m not a politician and the Sherriff’s Office will be in good hands and that sits well with me.”
Board chair Smith commended Garden for his work since being appointed sheriff last year to replace Rich Stevenson after he retired.
“Given us so much knowledge and expertise and he and his deputies are willing to listen. They work with us and we work with them. It’s a family.”
Board Vice-Chair Dr. Creighton Engel also commended Garden for developing a relationship between the sheriff’s department and county board that he says is the best he has seen.
