A crash between two semis on I-57 at the exit to the northbound rest area south of Salem ended with one trailer being ripped open and produce spilling onto the highway Sunday night.
Salem Fire Chief Dave Duncan says the crash apparently occurred when one of the truck was trying to avoid the other coming onto the highway. The truck swerved but still caught the side of the trailer and ripped it open spilling crates of lettuce and broccoli onto the roadway.
United Medical Response was first on the scene and called the fire department for assistance.
Duncan says both drivers refused medical treatment. Salem Firemen stayed at the scene to assist the State Trooper handling the crash move traffic into the one lane free of debris. Landers Towing was called to remove the trucks and the spilled produce.
The crash report came in at 9:30 Sunday night. Both lanes of northbound I-57 were reopened around midnight.
