Salem Firemen battled two grass fires that were first reported around noon on Sunday.
A fire on the Shawn Biven property in the 3600 block of Alma Hatchery Road destroyed a small tractor that had been brought to the scene to try and help put out the fire before firemen arrived.
Salem Fire Department Fire Marshall Bill Fulton says the fire had moved into an open field from a burn pile. A relative who lived nearby, Tom Biven, brought his tractor over to try and assist in putting out the fire. However, the extreme heat caused the engine to die and the fire overtook the tractor which will be a total loss. Fulton says no structures were damaged by the fire.
The other fire was on the Danny Easley property in the 5000 block of U.S. 50 east of Salem. A trash fire spread into a grassy area. Less than an acre burned and firemen were able to stop the fire before it reached a fence row.
