A fire that is currently labeled as suspicious heavily damaged one of two units of a duplex at 805 South 21st Street in Mt. Vernon.
Mt. Vernon Fire Chief Kevin Sargent says flames were showing throughout the vacant duplex unit when they arrived on the scene around 7:30 Friday morning. The unit where the fire started was vacant with no electricity. The State Fire Marshal’s office was called to investigate the cause of the fire.
The occupants of the other duplex unit were not at home. Most of the damage to that unit was from water used to fight the fire on the other side of the duplex.
Sargent reports no injuries or issues in fighting the fire.
Mt. Vernon called for mutual aid from Jefferson Rural, Woodlawn, Waltonville, and Ashley.
Firemen were on the scene for about two and a half hours.
