Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse says a husband and wife from Grafton, IL died after their pickup truck drifted onto the shoulder of I-57 at milepost 84 south of Mt. Vernon and ran under a parked semi.
The driver of the pickup is identified as 73-year-old Terry Stromske. He was pronounced dead on the scene from blunt force trauma. Hayse says 70-year-old Kathy Stromske was pinned in the vehicle and communicating with rescue personnel, but then coded once she was freed from the wreckage. Her cause of death is being listed as internal bleeding due to internal injuries.
The driver of the semi, 31-year-old Nodell Graves of Madison, Wisconsin, was not hurt.
The crash occurred at 2:32 Wednesday afternoon. The northbound lanes of the Interstate were closed about an hour and a half during the crash investigation.
