A Salem fireman exits house on North Marion after helping to eject smoke and checking the attic for any fire that may have spread from the stove.

Salem Firemen were called to a report of a kitchen fire at the Tom and Patrice Elsworth home at 513 North Marion Street in Salem Sunday afternoon.

Assistant Fire Chief Jim Cerny says there was no fire showing upon their arrival.

“We had a kitchen that had a smoke odor and a continuous amount of smoke coming from an air fryer that had inadvertently put on top of the stove with the burner on causing the plastic to melt and the smoke.”

Cerny explained what actions were necessary.

“The owner had already taken the air fryer outside.  We just made sure it had not extended into the attic. We didn’t have to use any water on it.  Just vented the building and got the smoke out.”

Cerny says there isn’t any last smoke damage in the home.  The stove will need repairs and the air fryer was destroyed.

The fire call came in at 1:50 Sunday afternoon.   Odin and Kell were initially called for mutual aid but were called off once first arriving firemen determined there wasn’t a working fire.
