The Odin School Board is looking at options to provide vocational training to students.

Superintendent Kimberly Briggs received permission at Monday’s school board meeting to advertise for a trades teacher.  She isn’t sure what type of response they will receive.  But she reports that is just one option being studied.

Briggs says the district could try and work out an agreement with Kaskaskia College to provide vocational classes or look at the Okaw Vocational School in Vandalia being used by both Patoka and South Central High School.

An earlier program with Kaskaskia College ran into problems because students were providing their own transportation.   Briggs reports the district is in the process of obtaining one of the short white busses that could transport students to vocational training programs not offered at the school.

Briggs says the district hopes to have something in place for the start of the next school year.

The board approved its annual tax levy at no more than 4.9-percent of an increase over this year’s property tax collections.   However, she doesn’t believe the district will actually receive that much additional money.

The board approved the hiring of Scott Moran as its new special education teacher.
