A 33-year-old Salem man is being held on charges from multiple incidents after leading Salem Police on a chase after allegedly fleeing the China King in the Westgate Shopping Center without paying for a meal and taking money from a tip jar.
Police say Steven Schultz of East Boone reportedly took the tip jar into the bathroom with him where he had allegedly emptied the change. When confronted, Schultz allegedly fled the restaurant on foot. He was later located at another nearby restaurant where he was taken into custody.
A decision on charges in the China King incident are still pending, but Schultz was arrested for felony criminal damage to state supported property for allegedly repeatedly kicking the rear door of a Salem Police squad car as he was being taken to jail.
Other charges from earlier incidents include residential burglary, two counts of criminal damage to property, and domestic battery. Police say on November 15th, Schultz is accused of going to a home in the 400 block of East Locust where he allegedly beat on the door and was throwing items. Before police arrived, Schultz had allegedly struck a resident in the face and left the area.
The following day, Schultz allegedly kicked in the door and entered a residence in the 300 block of East Boone Street. Salem Police say surveillance video captured Schultz kicking in the door.
Schultz remains in the Marion County Jail pending a final decision on new charges. He is already out on bond on other pending charges.
