CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago police officer who fatally shot a 61-year-old man inside his Chicago apartment last month had faced termination five years ago related to a drunken off-duty encounter with police.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports Former Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson had moved to fire the officer, who has not been named, after the 2016 incident. But the Police Board unanimously reinstated him saying he had entered treatment for alcohol abuse and been cleared for duty by a psychologist.
The officer was accused in the Oct. 4 shootings of Michael Craig. Lawyers for Craig’s family have questioned whether the officer was fit for duty and questioned “erratic” behavior.
