The Iuka Grade School has scheduled a special meeting for Friday night to discuss possible changes to its return to school plan.
Superintendent Sam Alli will be presenting changes that would bring the district into compliance with the Governor’s mandate that all students and staff wear masks inside school buildings.
The district has never changed its original plan that only recommended the masking. As a result, the district has been placed on probation by the State Board of Education. If the district doesn’t come into compliance within 60 days of their meeting with the State Board, they will lose recognition, then funding, and students will not be allowed to participate in post season sports.
However, starting Tuesday when students returned from the Labor Day Holiday, Alli says masks have been required based on the growing and high number of COVID-19 cases in the school district.
Alli says the meeting will begin at seven Friday night with public comment before the board takes any action.
Alli says if the board does agree to follow the Governor’s mandates they will likely look at joining other schools to regain local control over such issues.
