The Salem Wildcats are 1-1 after a 40-21 victory over visiting Alton Marquette. Salem got off to a 14-0 lead after the opening quarter getting a 74 yard touchdown run on Salem’s 2nd play from scrimmage from Caden Bee and an 18 yard catch and run from Sam Greene to Caden Harris. Salem then turned the ball over 3 consecutive possessions on a fumble, an onside kick recovered by Marquette and a pick 6 that propelled Marquette to a 21-14 lead with under 5 minutes to go in the half. Salem would respond with a touchdown run of 1 yard from Harris to tie the game at 21-21 at the halftime break.
Salem’s defense dominated the 2nd half, as the offense got a 58 yard td reception from Harris, a 23 yard td run from Bee to help Salem put the game away. Gage Eddings forced a fourth quarter fumble and Cole Johnson was hit for a 42 yard touchdown reception.
Salem’s sophomore quarterback was 9-of-14 for 194 yards with 3 touchdowns and one interception. Bee finished with 9 carries for 161 yards and 2 touchdowns. Harris had 2 catches for 2 touchdowns and 76 yards as the Cats outgained Marquette 433 to 223. The Cats hit the road for the first time next weekend traveling to Harrisburg.
