2022 09/04 – Robert ‘Bob’ Earl Crider

By Bruce Kropp Sep 4, 2021 | 5:41 PM

Robert “Bob” Earl Crider, 96, passed from this life at 7:35 pm on Thursday, September 1, 2022.

Bob was born on May 14, 1926 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to Everett and Maude (Poston) Crider. He married Norma (Troutt) Crider and went on to have four children.

Even as a child he worked hard. He and his brothers would peddle fruit to help his family. As a young man, he worked at the Stove Foundry in Mount Vernon and at the Mount Vernon Car Manufacturing Company, also known as the “car shops”, in Mount Vernon. Then at the age of 23, he started working at the Mount Vernon Register-News newspaper. He stayed there until retirement at the age of 65-42 years. He was very proud of his long career at the newspaper. He was a valued employee that hardly ever took a sick day or a vacation. He instilled in his children the value of work ethics and hard work. He also gave them the “Crider stubbornness”, which can be both good and bad, but mostly good.

Bob loved to tell stories of his childhood and life experiences. One such experience happened at a young age while on the school playground Bob was hurt on a swing and dislocated his hip. He reminisced that his mother called together the church people and they prayed for his recovery. Bob insisted that God touched his hip and he was healed.

Bob was of the Pentecostal Faith.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Lowell, Noble, Joe, Guida’ and Junior, wife, Norma, and daughter, Susan Crider. He is survived by his son, Terry Crider, daughters, Amanda Crider and Rachel Austin, son-in-law, Bryan Austin, and grandchildren, Levi and Lily Austin.

A Private Family Graveside Service will be held with Reverend Merle Fullerton and Reverend Greg Wright officiating.  Call Hughey Funeral Home at 618-242-3348 or visit hugheyfh.com for further information.
