Salem Police say DNA recovered from a cigarette has led to the arrest of a 24-year-old Salem man for a burglary in April of last year.

24-year-old Dustin Taylor of Hotze Road was taken into custody for residential burglary while a passenger in a traffic stop on Wednesday.

Salem Police Detectives say the cigarette was found at the home in the 200 block of South Castle that had been forcibly entered. The home had been ransacked with considerable damage as well as items stolen.

Police had initially stopped the vehicle Taylor was riding on West Main Street after receiving a complaint that the occupants of the vehicle were acting suspiciously in the Walmart Parking Lot.

The driver of the car 33-year-old Michelle Huggins, who told police she was homeless, was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs and possession of a controlled substance. A small amount of fentanyl was allegedly found in the vehicle after Salem canine Freddie alerted on the vehicle.

Both Taylor and Huggins were taken to the Marion County Jail pending a determination of formal charges.
