The Salem City Council is once again being asked to reduce the wild deer population in the city limits. The city council has been presented with a petition along with a packet that includes letters from a retired wildlife conservation officer and other residents as well as traffic crash reports from the Salem Police Department.
City Manager Rex Barbee notes the issue was brought up about a year ago when the council elected to take no action. He reports the two options at that time were to hire sharpshooters from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and have the meat processed for food pantries at an estimated cost of $20,000. The other option was to allow bow hunting within certain areas of the city during normal bow season. Barbee says some issues could arise from injured deer running onto adjacent properties and distressing other property owners.
The council will be asked to extend Tri-County Electric Cooperatives electric franchise agreement for another 20 years.
The council will also consider the reduction of one additional Class G Liquor License now that a proposed business for the former Family Video building has fallen through. Due to the recent upsurge in positive COVID cases, the meeting will be held remotely via Zoom conference call.
