State Police looking to add more women to the ranks

By WJBD Staff Aug 12, 2021 | 8:44 AM

A new initiative from the Illinois State Police aims to increase the number of women in its ranks.

The goal of the 30 by 30 initiative is for recruit classes to be made up of at least 30% females by the year 2030.

Women currently account for less than 10% of sworn law enforcement in the State Police.  Trooper Omoayean Williams says it’s a great career choice, no matter your gender.

“I always get the question from women like it’s a man’s job.  What I always say is there is no such thing as a man’s job.  You can have something that is man dominated but doesn’t necessarily make it a man’s job.”

Williams says it’s an amazing career with plenty of options.

“It’s a full service agency like I state we have patrol, investigation, public information office, we have a recruitment unit.  So basically anything you can think of the Illinois State Police has it.”
