Salem Grade School Superintendent Dr. Leslie Foppe says an untimely rain storm has damaged the roof of Franklin Park School gym. She reports the damage occurred during the major renovation work at Franklin Park School.

“The very peak of the gym got exposed and so water damaged down the middle of the gym.  Our guy who does the floor says he can fix it with Band-Aid for the school year so we don’t lose time during P.E. and sports and we are looking at what can be done next year and hopefully have a complete replacement done.”

Foppe says the contractor’s insurance company will cover the expense of the need improvements to the gym. On the positive side, she reports the renovation work at Franklin Park is on schedule.

“Franklin Park all the drainage we talked about having the water go to a different location…all that is done.  All the windows and doors are in and I believe all the doors are painted.  The new sidewalks are poured.  The ceiling grid is in/and or being put in.  All the HVAC units are in place and our new fire panel system is in place.”

Foppe does not anticipate the newly expanded parking lot at Hawthorn School to be completed by the start of school.

“The drop off bus lane has been poured, the curbs are in and that will be usable when school starts.  The parking lot we are just seeing what can be done and if we can park on it, it could be 2 weeks out but they are farther along than what I thought so it’s day by day now.”

Foppe says the new lighting for the parking lot is also in the process of being installed.

The work is being completed with federal COVID relief funds, life safety improvement bonds, and bonds issued on revenue from the district’s share of the one cent sales tax now being collect for Marion County schools.
