Governor JB Pritzker is signing what he calls the most comprehensive form to state firearms laws in over a generation.
State Police Director Brendan Kelly says the FOID and Concealed Carry License will now become one.
“Instead of carrying around 2 cards that has 2 different processes and 2 different fees will be able to combine them into a single thing. That’s good for not just the lawful gun owners but also for us with less paperwork and less bureaucracy.”
Card holders who submit their fingerprints will be able to get automatic renewal.
The Governor says there are safety provisions as well, such as universal background checks on all gun sales in Illinois starting in 2024.
“Prior to this change, people with dangerous history’s who shouldn’t possess a weapon, and the ISP denies firearms licenses to thousands of these individuals a year, could avoid detection through a private sell. That’s a deadly loophole and in Illinois we are closing that down for good.”
The measure also requires the Illinois State Police to remove guns from those with revoked FOID cards and creates a stolen gun database.
