Elizabeth Anne Garrison, 93, of Mount Vernon, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2022, at Nature Trail Health Care Center where she had been rehabbing after a stroke in April.
She was born on August 25, 1928, in Edwardsville, Illinois to Emil and Blanche (Miller) Klein. She grew up in various Southern Illinois towns and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1946. She and her future husband attended the University of Illinois. On June 8, 1947, Anne married Jack Garrison in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
She is survived by her children, Judy Rase of Mount Vernon, Jan Klontz and husband, Bryce of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Jim Garrison and wife, Tammy of Swansea, Illinois; grandchildren Bryce Klontz and wife, Emily of Boston, Massachusetts, Stephanie Hicks and husband, Kevin of Waterloo, Illinois, J.T. Leathers and wife, Crystal of Mount Vernon, Illinois Keri Urwin of Raleigh, North Carolina, Rob Garrison and wife, Megan of Swansea, Illinois and Lesley Garrison and husband, Patrick Hunt of Brooklyn, New York; and great-grandchildren, Will and Anne Hicks, Kendall and Skylar Urwin, Addyson Leathers, and Ellis Hunt.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son-in-law, Ken Rase; and sister, Margaret Prior. Anne was loved by her family and many friends and will be terribly missed.
Anne was an active member of the community. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon. She retired from teaching elementary school. She volunteered for over thirty years at Good Samaritan Hospital and was active in Angels on Assignment for many years. She served as a counselor at the Mitchell Museum and was chosen as a Senior Saint. She belonged to the Mount Vernon Garden Club where she served as president. She enjoyed playing bridge with her dear friends every week and belonged to a special birthday club. She enjoyed traveling all over the world, reading, doing crossword puzzles, and playing Jeopardy.
By her request, Anne was cremated. A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held Friday, July 22, 2022, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Celebration of Life will begin at 7:00 pm with Reverend Victor Long officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery.
