A shooting death involving two Carterville Police officers is under investigation by the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation-Zone 7.
State Police say the shooting occurred Tuesday afternoon when officers responded to a call of a man with a gun outside his residence. After repeatedly ordering the man identified as 52-year-old Joseph McGrath of Carterville to put down the shotgun while he stood on his front porch, McGrath reportedly raised the shotgun towards the officers. The Carterville officers then fired their weapons and struck McGrath. He was pronounced dead on the scene from his injuries by the Williamson County Coroner. The officers were not hurt.
State Police are investigating at the request of the Carterville Police Department. The investigation is said to be open and ongoing.
The shooting occurred around three Tuesday afternoon.
