State health officials worry about new COVID variant

As the state continues to work to vaccinate more people against COVID-19 a new variant is worrying those in public health.

The Delta variant is proving to be more contagious than past versions of COVID-19 and that’s why experts are saying getting fully vaccinated is more important than ever.

IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike says once you’ve taken the shot, patient outcomes greatly improve if you get sick with the virus.

“We look at all the new cases that were diagnosed in the month of May, just last month, and 95-percent of those people were not fully vaccinated,” said Ezike.

Illinois is averaging 231 new cases over the past 8 days.

Marion County will not be releasing any new report on cases until next week.

The Clinton County Health Department is reporting just two new cases for the week ending June 18th.  Those are the only two in isolation and there are no hospitalizations.

Jefferson County is reporting just four new cases from Saturday through Tuesday with six in isolation.
