A passerby is credited with spotting a house fire in Woodlawn and alerting the residents inside so they could get out safely.

The fire on Dayton Street near Woodlawn Lane was discovered around 11:15 Sunday night.

Woodlawn Assistant Fire Chief Joe Eckleberry said upon arrival flames were shooting 20 feet into the air from the attached garage. He reports while the garage was heavily damaged, they were able to stop the fire before it could spread through most of the home. A vehicle parked outside the garage was heavily
damaged. Another vehicle inside received moderate damage.

Due to the fire situation upon arrival, Mt. Vernon City, Jefferson Fire Protection District, Waltonville, Irvington and Kell Firemen were all called to the scene for mutual aid.

A state deputy fire marshal was scheduled to review the fire scene Monday to try and determine the cause.
