Juneteenth flag flies over the Illinois Capitol building to mark the first ever state and federal holiday in 2021.

The Juneteenth flag was raised over the Illinois State Capitol building in Springfield for the first time Saturday.

Illinois Secretary of State Jessie White says the flag was raised at sunrise in accordance with Governor JB Prizker’s proclamation to have the flag flown over the Capitol.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.  The Juneteenth flag will remain flying over the Capitol building throughout the weekend.

White says this is a significant moment in our country and state’s history.  He says he’s proud to witness it and that his office had a role in the event.
