Golf cars and side-by-sides to be allowed on Centralia streets

The Centralia City Council has agreed to allow golf carts and side by sides on all but the major highways in the city.

Mayor Bryan Kuder says he’s been receiving six to eight calls a week to allow the vehicles.

Councilman Jeff Castellari said it was time for the vehicles to be allowed.

“It’s been long thought out.  A lot of people and questions and it’s a lot of responsibility for the operators as well.  I want them to know that.  They have to meet certain rules and regulations.  I think it’s a great thing moving steps forward and getting with the times so to speak in town.”

The golf cart and side-by-side owners will have to provide proof of insurance to get a sticker from the city clerk’s office.

City Clerk Kim Enke says those interested can get paperwork from her office beginning Tuesday, but it will take about two weeks before the stickers arrive and the vehicles can be operated on the city streets.

Streets off limits are U.S. 51, Route 161, Walnut Hill Road and a portion of West Broadway from Pullen to Oak Park.
