The Centralia City Council Monday night voted to have the South Central Regional Planning Commission to complete a competitive grant application to replace the city’s raw water line from Carlyle Lake to the water treatment plant.

$550,000 is being requested to complete the project which City Manager Forrest Langenfeld is a much needed improvement.

“We are going to have a work session before the next big council meeting on the upcoming water project.  This is the first piece of that project.  Very similarly water line from Rend Lake to the City of Mt Vernon water system failed about 3 years ago and left Mt Vernon without water for about 3 days.  The design of that line and our line is very similar.  And that $550,000 will be something we don’t have to bond or get grants for elsewhere in the big water projects.”

The big water project includes replacing the entire water plant. South Central Planning is being used for the project because of their success record in getting the competitive grant requests funded. They will be paid $2,500 for their work.
