The Salem City Council has given their approval to two emergency utility issues.

The council authorized an estimated $50,000 repair project for a small leak in the high pressure natural gas feeder line to the city. A section of line northwest of Sandoval will be replaced this week. The city has lowered gas pressure on the line until repairs can be completed.

The council also approved the replacement of a hoist for the crane at the water plant that is used to position the one ton chlorine cylinders. The council was told the hoist was not operating properly and was dangerous. The new hoist will cost $7,211 from Shannahan Crane and Hoist of St. Louis.

Public Works Director Annette Brushwitz said neither item was budgeted. A savings of around $50,000 on a gas line replacement project will cover the cost of the emergency gas line repair. She plans to try and cut water plant expenses elsewhere to stay in budget with the hoist replacement.

The council approved a resolution to allow the 50th annual Little Egypt Festival Parade on Saturday, October 2nd.

The council was introduced to the city’s new Assistant Public Works Director Cory Purintun.
