Salem Police say a fishing boat was able to rescue a 49-year-old Centralia man who believed he was about to go under in the Salem Reservoir during the noon hour on Friday.
The man reportedly had swum 900 feet out into the lake from the Salem Township Hospital end of the Nature Trail to try and retrieve his radio-controlled boat when the battery died. Police say after reaching the boat, the man became winded and began calling for help. His girlfriend who was onshore called 911, but before help arrived some fishermen picked him up in a boat and took him to shore.
The man declined any hospital treatment and apparently did not swallow any of the lake water.
