Masks come off at Iuka Grade School

By WJBD Staff May 20, 2021 | 8:25 AM

The masks have come off at Iuka Grade School.

Students and staff no longer have to wear face masks, but they will still be required for visitors and vendors.

Superintendent John Consolino says the school board felt it was time to take local control and made the decision based on the overwhelming sentiment in the community, what they felt was best for students and employee, and a review of CDC guidelines. He notes input was sought from parents, teachers and the
district’s two registered nurses, one who has 30 plus years of experience.

Consolino has reported no complaints about the decision. He says those supporting taking the masks off in the final week of school felt it was important for the students and teachers to be able to see each other’s faces.

Consolino made the surprise announcement by going classroom to classroom on Monday. Consolino told the students he had two surprises. One was a candy bar as his going away present for them and then, that they could take their masks off. Consolino is leaving the district as Superintendent as of June 30th. He has not yet announced his new position.
