The Illinois State Board of Education is voting to require most kids to return to the classroom in the fall.
The Board approved a resolution signifying that it’s time to get back to school. State Superintendent Carmen Ayala:
“Although online classes are a far better option than no classes at all, multiple studies show that students learn best when present, in person alongside their teachers, peers and support network. That’s especially true for students who struggle academically or with mental health.”
The only exception will be students who are unable to receive the vaccine and are also under public health quarantine orders. The resolution does not include a vaccine mandate.
Springfield School District parent Katherine Eastvold testified before the Board about her concerns, saying remote studies should still be an option, especially for younger students who aren’t eligible for the vaccine yet.
