Graduating Salem Community High School Seniors have been awarded an estimated $1-million-156-thousand dollars in scholarships.
Despite the challenges of COVID-19 on the current school year, Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering says students earned about the same number of scholarships and other awards for their school activity.
“Class of 2021 is an exceptional class and we are just excited that we can be back in person. Unfortunately the class of 2020 we had to do remote. Just wonderful to see all the students here in anticipation of the awards that will be handed out tonight. It’s one of the most enjoyable nights of the year.”
In addition to a large number of scholarships, a number of students won outstanding student awards.
They included Kaitlyn Banning and Haddon Lybarger as the DAR and SAR award winners. Tyler Gillett was named Senior Volunteer of the Year and Erik Helm Outstanding Senior of the Year.
Peter Huang was named outstanding math student. Sierra Charlton and Bethany Johnson were honored as outstanding English students. Haddon Lybarger and Griffin Snodsmith were honored as Outstanding Student Council members. Bethany Johnson received the Outstanding Child Care Student Award, Megan Morrison as Outstanding Clothing and Textiles Student, Rhea Hutchings and Jairva Stroud as Outstanding Nursing Assistant Students.
Other award winners include Kailey Schmitz as Outstanding General Studies Student, Tyson Mann as Outstanding Science Student, Rue Davis and Tyler Smith as Outstanding Social Studies students, and Kaitlyn Banning and Jenna Middleton as Outstanding Spanish students.
In the music department, Chloe Beal and Isabelle Murphy were named Outstanding Vocalists, Isabelle Murphy Choral Director’s Award, and Peter Huang John Philip Sousa Award. Megan Morrison was named Outstanding Drama Student.
The Senior Technology Award was presented to Haydyn Hartwig, the Building Trades Student of the Year to Brighton Lucas and Auto Student of the Year Ethan Sellers.
The Outstanding Physical Education Students of the Year were Tyler Smith and Madison Struckhoff.
