2022 02/26 – Reta Garren

Reta Garren, age 80 of Centralia, passed away on Monday, February 21, 2022 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. Reta retired from her career at Murray Center. In later years, Reta began volunteering at Raccoon Grade School, and eventually became a teacher’s aide. During her time here, she made valuable friends that later became like a second family to her. She was able to touch so many lives of both teachers and students while working at RGS. She had a passion for traveling and loved to have her family join her on her adventures. She could usually be found in her favorite spot – on her porch, basking in the sunshine. Reta was known for her generosity to others, her wise advice and life lessons, and her love that knew no bounds. Her most valuable possession was her family, especially her grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Crouse Funeral Home in Salem in assisting the family with arrangements. Memorial contributions can be made to Raccoon Grade School and can be left at the funeral home. Online condolences can be made at www.CrouseFH.com.

She is survived by her two daughters, Regina Dehn of Centralia and Roni Smith and husband Rob of Walnut Hill; two grandchildren, Lauren Smith and fiancé Brandon Beaver and Robby Smith and special friend Baylee Black; and two brothers James Lamkin and wife Cheryl of Texas and Joe Lamkin and wife Judy of Oklahoma.

Reta was born on July 14, 1941 in Jasper County, IL the daughter of Lester and Mary (Ochs) Lamkin. She married Howard G. Garren in 1971 and he preceded her in death on June 24, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard; son-in-law, Randy Dehn; sisters, Judy Lamkin, Sandra Leist, Pat McIntyre, and Susan Lamkin; and one brother, Bobby Jo Lamkin.
