For those going through the COVID-19 vaccination process or who are about to the Illinois Department of Public Health has some reminders.

State Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike says you won’t reach maximum protection against the coronavirus until 10-14 days after you receive the 2nd dose of the vaccine.  But even then she says you still need to be careful.

“We know that even after that point there are a very small percentage of people that won’t be completely protected and still a bigger possibility that you can still contract the virus which means you can still pass the virus to people around you.  So vaccine or not, masking still is the name of the game and we have to continue that for quite awhile to come.”

Ezike says the good news is that the COVID vaccine is about 95% effective.  That’s a far greater percentage than the annual flu shot which is around 40-50% effective.
