James A. Vaughn, Sr., 88 of Salem, Illinois passed away December 28, 2021 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, IL. James served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War conflict. He worked at several companies including Brown Shoe Company and Jewel Tea Company. He was co-owner of Jimmy’s Drive-In and the Grand Motel, both in Salem, along with several other small motels in Illinois. He was a member of the Salem American Legion Post #128, and a Life Time member of the Masonic Lodge Morris #787 in Waterloo, Illinois.
Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Friday in the chapel of Sutherland – Rankin Funeral Home with a dear family friend, David Ball officiating. Burial will follow in the East Lawn Cemetery with military honors accorded at the graveside by the Salem American Legion Post of Salem. Visiting hours will be from 11:00 am until the service hour at the funeral home.. The family kindly request masks be worn during the services and social distancing be observed. Vaughn, Jr. of Salem and son-in-law Ben Krohe of Arenzville, IL along with grandchildren April Vaughn and friend Ricky Royer of Belleville, IL, Brian Krohe and wife Marlene of Bluff Spring, IL, Jacob Vaughn and wife Danielle of St. Petersburg, FL, Jason Goostree and wife Jacy of Carter, OK, Eric Goostree and wife Jennifer of McAlester, OK and Brad Krohe of Kansas City, MO. He also is survived by great grandchildren Austin Krohe and friend Heather of Rushville, IL, Brice Krohe of Bluff Springs, IL, Clayton Vaughn of Spring Hill, FL, Justin Vaughn of Valdosta, GA, Morgan Vaughn of Las Vegas, NV, Jack and Brady Wootton of Carter, OK, Sarah, Abby and Hannah Goostree of McAlester, OK and Aspen Royer of Belleville, IL. James is also survived by 2 great great-grandchildren, Kevin and Eli Krohe of Rushville, IL. Also left to mourn his passing is sister Linda Kay Smith and husband Bob of Grand Island, NE and many nieces and nephews.
James Aubry Vaughn was born October 28, 1933 in Salem, the son of Wilmer and Pauline (Stein) Vaughn. He was preceded in death by his parents, along with his ex-wife Norma (Donoho) Vaughn on January 1, 2020, and his daughter Debra (Vaughn) Krohe and brother Richard Vaughn.
