Mary Evelyn Shelton, 82, of Mount Vernon, went to be with her Creator, God, at 2:42 pm, Tuesday, November 23, 2021.

She was born August 29, 1939, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Jack and Beulah Shelton. She married Ronald Eugene Shelton on January 11, 1957, at the First Baptist Church in Harrisburg, Illinois.

Mrs. Shelton is survived by two sons, Ronnie Shelton and wife, Marrisa of Texico and Danny Shelton of Mount Vernon, Illinois; two daughters, Becci Horst and husband, Mark of Centralia, Brenda Hall and husband, Les of Knoxville, Tennessee; two brothers, Harold Fred (Doc) Shelton and wife, Bunnie of Mount Vernon, Illinois, George Roy Shelton of Opdyke, Illinois; fourteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald, who passed on February 7, 2015; one granddaughter, Danielle Doering; her parents; one sister; and six brothers.

Mrs. Shelton loved nature. She was happiest working outdoors. The sunshine and fresh air fed her soul. The only thing she loved more was her family. She taught her children sacrifice and strength by the example in which she lived. “Our family is a circle of strength and love, every crisis faced together makes the circle stronger”

To honor her wishes, a private graveside burial of ashes will be held at a later date at Hopewell Cemetery in Jefferson County, Illinois. Mrs. Shelton will be cremated and there will be no visitation. Call Hughey Funeral Home at 618-242-3348 or visit hugheyfh.com for further information.
