2021 11/28 – Charles Curtis Grothoff

Charles Curtis Grothoff, 87, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 10:58 pm on November 22, 2021, at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon. He was born January 27, 1934, in Belle Rive, Illinois to the late Charles and Lucy (McFarland) Grothoff. Charles married Wilma Louise (Ferguson) Grothoff on June 8, 1957, in Mount Vernon. They were blessed with 64 years of marriage.

In addition to his beloved wife, Charles is survived by his granddaughter, Melissa Knappier and fiancé, Christopher Greene; brother, Clarence Edward Grothoff and husband, Linda of Mount Vernon; sister, Mildred Zirkelbach of Belle Rive, Illinois; great-grandchildren, Dylan Bruns, Devin Bruns, and Guy Twiggs, all of Mount Vernon; eleven great-great-grandchildren; nephews, Raymond Tolley and wife, Susan and Dave Zirkelbach and wife, Cindy; nieces, Jacqueline Rainey and husband, Bill and Julie Johnson and husband, Mark; and several great-nephews and great-nieces.

In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by son, Colby Grothoff; daughter, Deborah Lemmers; and sister, Margaret Morgan.

Charles proudly served his country in the United States Army. He loved old farm machinery, tools, and cars. He was a loving family man who will be greatly missed.

A Greeting of Family and Friends will be held Sunday, November 28, 2021, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Memorial Service will begin at 2:00 pm. Inurnment will take place at Grothoff Cemetery in Belle Rive at a later date. Memorials may be made in Charles’ honor to the Park Avenue Food Pantry.
