The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy had their traditional Halloween spook house, but with no tents this year to allow for participants to better socially distant.
The Salem Recreation Department and Marion County YMCA once again combined efforts for a Halloween Costume Contest.
The event was moved outdoors to the new city parking lot east of the Salem Fire Protection District to comply with COVID-19 mitigation efforts.
The winners included in the three and younger category, Isabelle Brooks took first, June Graham second, and Rocky Krajefska third.
In the 4 to 7-year-old age bracket, Maddox Lograsso took first, Lilly Krajefska second, and Austyn Veach third.
In the 8 to 12-year-old age bracket, Tessa Bookhout was first, Caid Davis 2nd, and Carly Veach third
In the family division, Vence, Tony, and Isabelle Krajefska and Cole Johnson took first; Naomi, Justin, and Amanda Draper second; and Haze and Draven Dagg third.
Salem Recreation Director Jed Casburn noted participation was down from last year, but he felt the contest went well.
While the traditional distribution of candy at downtown businesses didn’t take place, some other traditions continued with some twists to meet COVID-19 regulations. The Medicine Shoppe had its traditional haunted display. The First Baptist Church in Salem converted its Trunk or Treat to candy distribution to passing trick or treaters with buckets to drop treats into the youngsters’ candy bags.
