2021 10/04 – Donald E. McMullen

Donald E. McMullen, age 84 of Salem, passed away at his home on Monday, September 27, 2021.

Donald was born on September 27, 1937, in Effingham, the son of Robert C. and Gertrude (Wente) McMullen.  He married Barbara “Barb” Brown on September 2, 1967, in Rochelle at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and she survives in Salem.

In addition to his wife Barb McMullen, he is survived by his two daughters, Jennifer Horbenko and husband Nick of Shiloh, and Erin McMullen of Shiloh; two step-grandchildren, Isabelle and Dylan; five brothers, Larry McMullen, Richard McMullen, Phillip McMullen and wife Mary Jane, Michael McMullen, and Robert McMullen and wife Sue; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister-in-law, Laverne McMullen.

Don was a member of St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church in Salem.  He had served in the Illinois Air National Guard.  He was a college professor at Eastern Illinois University for nine years and at Kaskaskia Community College until his retirement in May of 1998.  He had taught Economics, Business Management, Marketing, and Business Law.  He enjoyed woodworking, blacksmith work, fishing, camping, reading history books, motorcycle riding, and was an avid animal lover.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 4, 2021, at 11:00 am at St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church with Father Abraham Adejoh officiating.  Visitation will be on Monday from 9:00 am until 10:45 am in the St. Theresa Gym.  Interment will follow at Paradise Cemetery in Salem with Military Rites by the Salem American Legion.  In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation, St. Theresa Catholic Church, or the Salem Animal Shelter and can be received at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem.  Online condolences can be left at www.CrouseFH.com or on the funeral home’s Facebook page.
