Suburban Chicago personal injury lawyer Kathy Salvi has won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in Illinois.
Salvi topped a field of seven candidates Tuesday to win the nod to take on first-term incumbent Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth in November. Duckworth is a veteran of the Iraq War and is very popular in Illinois. Salvi campaigned on a pledge to work to unify the warring factions of her party. She maintains Duckworth is beatable because the fall election will be a vote about the success or failure of the Biden administration.
In other statewide races, Alexi Giannoulias won the four way primary to become the Democratic candidate for Secretary of State, while Dan Brady defeated John Milhiser in the Republican primary. The two will face off in November to replace the retiring Jesse White.
In the Republican primary for Attorney General, Thomas DeVore was the easy winner in the three way race beating Steve Kim and David Shestokas. DeVore now meets incumbent Attorney General Kwame Raoul in November. DeVore made his name in leading efforts to get rid of the Governor’s masking requirements during COVID-19.
Centralia resident Joshua Qualls lost his attempt to be the Democratic candidate in the 12th Congressional District. While winning Marion County, he fell district wide to Chip Markel by more than 2,000 votes.
Meanwhile, Mary Miller defeated Rodney Davis as the two Republican incumbents faced off in the 15th Congressional District in Central Illinois. With 95-percent of the vote in, Miller had 63,958 votes to Davis’ 47,800.
