The Executive Director of the Centralia Youth Center Herb Williams pleaded with the city council Monday night to restore the summer youth employment program.
He warned without the four workers at the Youth Center the Summer Youth Camp could not be held this summer.
“The CC Board of Young Adults asks of you to please, please to continue the investment with the summer youth program for the 4 kids to work. Without your support, the summer youth program goes down the drain. 600 kids a week being out there doing who knows what.”
The summer youth program provides meals, activities, and trips that Williams says many could not experience otherwise.
No members of the council responded to the request that had been made during the public forum. After the meeting, Mayor Bryan Kuder said the issue would be discussed in the future.
In other action, the council agreed to declare the following properties as surplus and seek bids for their sale: 1335 South Locust, 1015 North Franklin, 508 and 510 East Kell, 902 South Marion, and over an acre of land on Raccoon Lake that has a deep ravine and is not a good building site. Bids will be opened at the June 13th meeting. City Clerk Kim Engh says in many cases neighbors were interested in acquiring the properties. Howell Paving and Beelman Logistic received the bids to provide materials for the 2022 Motor Fuel Tax oil and chip resealing program.
Shannon Cooney was reappointed to the Tourism Commission and Arizona Berning to the Veterans Affairs Commission.
Both Centralia Officer Curtis Griffith and Water Plant Lead Maintenance Operator Roger Kapp were honored for 15 years of service.
