Mt. Vernon City Firefighters say an abandoned home burned in a fire early Saturday night.

Firemen reported the home at 1110 South 23rd was engulfed in fire upon their arrival.    The blaze was hot enough to melt siding on an adjacent home about ten feet away at 1112 South 23rd.   There was no one home at the second residence and it was not immediately clear if it was occupied.

The fire remains under investigation and is suspicious because there were no utilities at the residence.

Jefferson Fire Protection District provided mutual aid at the scene and Kell Firemen stood by at the Mt. Vernon Fire station in the event of another fire.

The fire call came in at five Saturday night, with firemen on the scene for about two and a half hours.
