More Bryan Memorial Park improvements expected in next few weeks

Salem City Manager Rex Barbee told the Salem City Council Monday night additional improvements are coming to Bryan Memorial Park in the next few weeks.

Barbee reported an area is being prepared on the southeast corner of Addie and Friend’s Inclusive Playground for the pouring of a concrete slab that will be the base for installation of another shelter. The shelter will go up as soon as the concrete cures.

Barbee says additional exercise equipment will be installed on the north end of the walking trail during the next few weeks as well.

The projects are part of a state OSLAD grant that provided matching funds for money raised locally under the direction of the Salem Lion’s Club for the new playgrounds. Barbee says the city’s deadline for expending the funds is coming up in April. The addition of other park amenities is still scheduled for this
summer.

The council only had three bid approvals on their agenda Monday night.

The council approved a bid from ATV’s and More for $11,157 for a new 60 inch zero-turn mower for the cemetery even though it was $3.24 more than the lowest responsive bid from Ramsour Farm Supply in Centralia. The city council recently increased to 10-percent the amount a local bidder can be high and still have it
approved over a higher out-of-town bid. Bids were also awarded for various chemicals at the water treatment plan and rock and sand for general maintenance for the fiscal year beginning May first.
