One person has died and another was treated at a St. Louis Hospital following a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Tonti and Kinmundy Road northwest of Iuka.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Department reports a car driven by 53-year-old Karen Putt of Malone Road in Alma pulled from the stop sign on the Kinmundy Road into the path of a westbound vehicle on Tonti Road driven by 70-year-old Robert Wright of Robert Road in rural Iuka.   The two collided in the intersection.   Putt told deputies she was blinded by the sun.

Both Robert Wright and his mother who was a passenger, 96-year-old Margaret Wright also of the Robert Road, were both airlifted to St. Louis Hospitals from the scene by separate medical helicopters.   The sheriff’s department reports Margaret Wright later died from her injuries.

Putt declined medical treatment at the scene.   She was ticked for failure to yield at a stop intersection.

Iuka Fire Chief Kenny Eagan says they had to cut off a back passenger door to get a backboard into the vehicle to help get Margaret Wright out of the vehicle.   Robert Wright was also removed from the vehicle via backboard to be transported to the hospital.

The crash occurred at five Tuesday afternoon.
