The Salem City Council has agreed to spend $41,544 to make repairs to the pumping system that keeps water from flooding the East Main Street underpass.

Public Works Director Annette Brushwitz says the system no longer works automatically.

“The control panel that is on there now does not work at all.  We have to manually go down there, go down in the pit and turn breakers on and off to get this pump to run.”

Brushwitz says only one of the three pumps is currently working.

However, she feels the problems are minor. They will be taken out to determine what type of repairs are needed.

Brushwitz says the situation has existed the past few years, raising questions why the needed repairs were not budgeted instead of coming to the city council as an unbudgeted emergency.
