Several options are available to dispose of your live Christmas trees as the holiday season comes to an end.
In Salem, Public Works Director Annette Brushwitz says Christmas trees placed at curbside will be picked up on your regular landscape waste pickup day of Tuesday or Thursday. Brushwitz says the city will provide the trees for fish habitat in an area lake.
In Centralia, trees can be dropped off at the Public Works yard at 114 East Fifth Street.
The US Army Corps of Engineers at Carlyle Lake will once again be collecting used, real Christmas trees for their annual Christmas Tree Recycling Project. The Corps along with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, uses those trees to provide effective and economical fish habitat at Carlyle Lake.
Christmas Trees can be donated through January 30th at Plant Land on Old US 50 east of Breese, Dam East High Water Boat Ramp and the Little Prairie Nature Trail parking lot located in the West Spillway at Carlyle Lake.
In Salem, Centralia, and in Clinton County, you are asked to make sure all decorations, including garland and tinsel, are removed. No artificial trees or wreaths will be accepted.
