State and local police are boosting patrols for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Illinois Department of Transportation spokesperson Paul Wappel says this is one of the busiest travel times of the year, so extra police, special details and roadside safety checks are being deployed.
“They are joining together so everyone makes it to their Thanksgiving destination safely. They are going to do their best to keep impaired drivers off the road. We want to remind and encourage everyone to use your seatbelt. It’s the law of course, but it’s also you best defense in a crash.”
Wappel says as of November 12th, 1,090 people have died on Illinois roads this year. That’s an increase over the last year.
