The Iuka Fire Department successfully rescued a 60-pound boxer dog that fell into a hand-dug well behind the Ryan Ball home in rural Iuka early Tuesday morning.
Iuka Fire Chief Kenny Eagan says Ball was unable to get the dog, ‘Gracie’ out on his own, and after calls to the Animal Control officer went unanswered the fire department was called to assist. Eagan says they were able to put a ladder down the ten-foot well to get to the dog and were able to lift him to safety. He reports the dog was not injured in the fall. Eagan estimates the rescue took about 16 minutes.
Firemen received the call at 1:30 Tuesday morning. The owners had started searching for the dog around 10:30 Monday night when it failed to return home. During the search of a nearby field, the dog was heard whimpering and was located. The sheriff’s department was called after Ball was unable to free the dog. No one was aware the well was in the field. It had been covered in brush.
